The Van Winkle Story

The Van Winkle name traces back to Julian "Pappy" Van Winkle Sr., who ran the Stitzel-Weller Distillery in Louisville from the 1930s until his death in 1965. Stitzel-Weller closed as a producing distillery in 1992, but the wheated bourbon recipe — wheat in place of rye as the secondary grain — survived through his grandson, Julian Van Winkle III, who has partnered with Buffalo Trace Distillery since the mid-1990s to age and bottle the Van Winkle family's bourbon and rye lines.
