The Sazerac cocktail — rye whiskey, absinthe rinse, sugar and Peychaud's Bitters — is one of the oldest documented cocktails in America, tracing to 19th-century New Orleans. Buffalo Trace named this release after it as part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, alongside Thomas H. Handy (the unaged, barrel-proof rye in the same family) and George T. Stagg.
A Style Rarely Aged This Long
Most rye whiskey, even premium expressions, is bottled well before 18 years — rye grain tends to pick up aggressive spice and tannin faster than corn-forward bourbon mashbills. Sazerac 18 Year is one of the few American ryes proven to hold its balance this deep into maturation, which is exactly why it has anchored the BTAC lineup since the collection's earliest releases.
Tasting Notes
At 45% ABV, the extended aging shows as layered rye spice, rich oak and dried fruit — more restrained than a barrel-proof BTAC release, but with a depth that younger ryes simply can't match. It's often described as the standard-bearer for what aged American rye whiskey can be.
