The Karuizawa Story

Karuizawa sits in the Japanese Alps at 1,000 metres elevation — the highest whisky distillery ever built. Founded in 1955, it operated for 45 years using 100% Golden Promise barley (an unusually delicate malting variety) and Spanish sherry casks to produce a style of Japanese whisky that was uniquely rich, dark and intensely fruited compared to its lowland contemporaries.

Why Did It Close?

Japanese whisky fell out of domestic fashion through the 1990s as drinking habits shifted toward other spirits, and Karuizawa's parent company shut production down in 2000, leaving approximately 400 casks in various states of maturation. Ghost distillery whisky — from a site that will never produce again — occupies a unique position in the market: unlike an active distillery's rare releases, there is no possibility of new stock ever entering the supply.
