Louis 13 Cognac Price: What Every Edition Costs and Why
The Louis 13 cognac price starts at $4,299.99 for the standard Louis XIII bottle at Caskworth and climbs to $185,000 for the rarest decanter we list. That gap is the whole story of this cognac: one name, four very different price tiers. This guide shows what each edition costs, why Louis XIII is priced like a collector’s object and not a drink, and what to check before you spend four or five figures on a bottle.
What Is Louis XIII Cognac?
Louis XIII is the flagship of Rémy Martin, one of the oldest cognac houses. According to the house, it was born in 1874 through the work of Paul-Émile Rémy Martin, great-grandson of the founder, and it is made by blending up to 1,200 individually aged eaux-de-vie. The house says its cellar master, Baptiste Loiseau, selects and sets aside the finest Grande Champagne eau-de-vie for ageing, and that the spirit rests in century-old Limousin oak casks in the house cellars. You can read the house’s own account on the official LOUIS XIII history page.
Two details explain most of what you pay. First, the blend is built from spirits of many ages, and the youngest eaux-de-vie in it are far older than anything on a normal shelf. For comparison, the Cognac trade body (the BNIC) sets the minimum for an X.O at 10 years, measured by the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend, so an X.O is where ordinary premium cognac ends and Louis XIII is only the beginning of a different category. Second, the decanter is part of the product: the house describes it as hand-cut, blown, individually engraved and numbered, and based on a 16th-century flask found in Jarnac. The rules behind these age grades are set out by the BNIC, the Cognac trade body.
The standard bottle is bottled at 40% ABV, and every Louis XIII we list shares that strength. When people search for the Louis XIII cognac price, this standard bottle is usually the one they mean. What changes between editions is rarity, the cask the spirit came from, and the decanter.
Louis 13 Cognac Price by Edition
Here is what each Louis XIII costs on our shelves today. Prices are the current Caskworth listing prices in US dollars and can change, so always confirm on the product page before you order. Paying with cryptocurrency lowers every price below by 10% automatically at checkout.
| Edition | ABV | Caskworth price | What sets it apart (per our listing) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Louis XIII (classic) | 40% | $4,299.99 | The core blend of up to 1,200 eaux-de-vie from Grande Champagne |
| Louis XIII Black Pearl | 40% | $24,999.99 | Presented in a Baccarat crystal decanter |
| Louis XIII Rare Cask | 40% | $34,999.99 | From a single exceptional terçon barrel |
| Louis XIII Black Pearl Grande Champagne | 40% | $185,000 | Made from the oldest Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie in the cellars, in a Baccarat crystal decanter |
Read the table as a ladder. The classic bottle is the entry point: if you want to buy Louis XIII cognac, this is the one to start with. Black Pearl costs about 5.8 times as much, Rare Cask about 8.1 times as much, and the Grande Champagne Black Pearl about 43 times as much. The jump is not about taste alone. At those levels you are paying for scarcity, provenance and the object.

Why Louis XIII Costs So Much
Understanding the Louis 13 cognac price helps you decide whether it is worth it for you. Five forces push the price up.
- Time. A cellar master has to plan decades ahead, because the eaux-de-vie that will go into a bottle today were distilled by earlier generations. Money tied up in ageing stock for that long is part of the cost of every bottle.
- Complexity of the blend. The house says Louis XIII can blend up to 1,200 individually aged eaux-de-vie. Selecting, tasting and balancing that many components is skilled work that cannot be rushed or automated.
- Terroir. Grande Champagne is the most prestigious of Cognac’s six growing areas. The BNIC notes that Fine Champagne blends must contain at least 50% Grande Champagne, so a spirit made around Grande Champagne sits at the top of the appellation’s hierarchy.
- The decanter. A hand-cut, hand-blown, individually engraved and numbered decanter is a craft object in its own right. Limited and collaboration decanters add further cost.
- Scarcity and demand. The more limited an edition, the more it behaves like a collectible. Rare Cask and the Grande Champagne Black Pearl are priced as collector pieces, not as drinks.
None of this means every buyer needs the most expensive edition. It means the price is the combined result of ageing stock, craft and rarity, and the right edition depends on what you want from the bottle.
Louis 13 Cognac Cost Per Pour
Many people first meet Louis XIII as a single pour at a bar, so it helps to turn the bottle price into a serving price. A standard 750 ml bottle holds about 25 one-ounce pours, which is the simplest way to understand the Louis thirteenth cognac price in everyday terms. At our listed $4,299.99, that works out to roughly $172 per ounce before any restaurant markup. A smaller 15 ml tasting measure costs about $86 on the same arithmetic.
- One-ounce pour: about $172 from the classic bottle.
- Black Pearl: about $1,000 per ounce.
- Rare Cask: about $1,400 per ounce.
These are arithmetic figures from our own list prices, not quotes from any bar. Check the bottle size on the listing, because the pours per bottle change with the volume. If you mainly want to taste the cognac, a bar pour can be a cheaper way to find out whether you like the style before committing to a bottle. If you plan to open it for a milestone, a whole bottle shared among several people lowers the cost per person.
It also helps to decide in advance how you will use the bottle. A tasting among four friends, with each person taking a small measure, turns a four-figure purchase into a shared occasion, while a sealed bottle kept as a gift or collection piece never needs to be poured at all. Either way, the right question is not whether Louis XIII is cheap, but whether the price matches the way you will enjoy it.
Louis XIII vs Other Top Cognacs by Price
To see how the Louis 13 cognac cost compares with the rest of the shelf, here is the same ladder using other cognacs we stock:
| Bottle | Caskworth price | Louis XIII classic costs about |
|---|---|---|
| Hennessy V.S | $39.99 | 107 times as much |
| Hennessy X.O | $199.99 | 21.5 times as much |
| Hennessy Paradis | $999.99 | 4.3 times as much |
| Hennessy Richard Hennessy | $4,999.99 | About 0.9 times (it costs slightly more) |
The comparison shows where Louis XIII sits: well above X.O and Extra-level cognac, and level with the very top of other houses’ ranges. If your budget is closer to $1,000 than $4,000, our most expensive cognacs guide and the cognac grades explained in V.S, V.S.O.P and X.O show what the tiers below Louis XIII offer. Which Edition Should You Buy?
A clear verdict saves you from overspending. Use these rules:
- You want the real Louis XIII experience at the lowest entry price: choose the classic bottle. Every edition in this guide shares the same 40% strength, and the classic bottle is the reference point for the whole line.
- You want a gift that looks as remarkable as it tastes: look at the Louis XIII Black Pearl, which our listing describes as presented in a Baccarat crystal decanter.
- You collect and want maximum rarity: the Louis XIII Rare Cask is listed as coming from a single exceptional terçon barrel, which makes it the most exclusive Rémy Martin expression we carry.
- You want to taste first: try a pour at a good cognac bar, then decide on a bottle.
If the budget is firm and below $2,000, Louis XIII is probably not the right target. A well-aged X.O or an Extra-level cognac gives you much of the pleasure for a fraction of the cost.
How to Buy a Louis XIII Bottle Safely
At these prices, how and where you buy matters as much as the Louis XIII bottle you pick. Before ordering:
- Confirm the exact edition and size on the listing, and read the description line by line. “Louis XIII”, “Black Pearl” and “Rare Cask” are different products.
- Check the presentation. A Louis XIII cognac bottle should come in its presentation case. Ask whether the case and certificate are included.
- Confirm the delivery terms. Delivery fees vary by location. Caskworth offers same-day delivery to 33 U.S. states and 7 Canadian provinces for in-stock bottles ordered by 2PM, with a $249.99 minimum order and 21+ age verification at delivery.
- Understand the returns policy. Our policy requires returns to be sent back by mail so the bottle’s authenticity can be checked, with a 7-day window.
- Keep your documents. Save the order confirmation and any paperwork. They matter for insurance and for resale value later.
For anything above $20,000, contact us before you order. A short call confirms availability and delivery arrangements.
Common Mistakes
- Treating the cheapest listing as the best deal. Unusually low Louis 13 cognac prices are a warning sign. Authentic stock has a known cost floor.
- Ignoring the edition. Black Pearl, Rare Cask and the Grande Champagne decanter are not interchangeable with the classic, so compare the edition and not just the title when you see a Louis the Thirteenth cognac price.
- Buying for investment without a plan. Spirit prices can fall as well as rise. Buy it because you want to open it or own it, not because you expect a guaranteed return.
- Overlooking storage. Keep the bottle upright, away from sunlight and heat, in its case.
- Assuming all cognac ages the same way. The BNIC says, in its French-language appellation guide, that cognac keeps the age it had when it was bottled for its whole life, so there is no benefit in waiting for an unopened bottle to improve.
Watching how the house itself presents the spirit can also help. The short film Cognac LOUIS XIII, a 3-minute film made by Ina with Rémy Martin shows the house and its cellars in action and gives a sense of the craft behind the price.
