The 1983 Closures
On May 31, 1983, Diageo's predecessor company closed 11 of Scotland's Scotch whisky distilleries in a single day, citing market oversupply. Among them were Port Ellen on Islay and Brora in Sutherland — two distilleries that would prove to be among Scotland's greatest losses.
Port Ellen — Islay's Lost Legend
Port Ellen produced a heavily peated, coastal Islay malt of extraordinary complexity. In the years after closure, collectors discovered that the remaining casks were unlike anything still being produced. Annual releases from Diageo's Special Releases program — typically between 30-40 years old — now sell immediately and command prices of $7,999.99 to $11,999.99 at retail. Auction prices are considerably higher.
Brora — Highland's Waxy Wonder
Brora produced a uniquely waxy, lightly peated Highland malt that bears no resemblance to any currently distilling Highland expression. The 40 Year Annual Release at $10,999.99 represents one of the most historically significant drams available anywhere on earth.
The Rebirths
Both distilleries have now been rebuilt and recommissioned by Diageo. New-make spirit began flowing again in 2021. But the aged stocks from 1983 and before remain irreplaceable — and every year that passes makes them older, scarcer and more valuable.
