Best Brandy to Buy: Top Picks by Style and Budget

The best brandy for you depends on the style you like and what you want to spend, and the range is wider than most people expect. Brandy runs from $15 American bottles to $200 aged Armagnac and cognac in the thousands. This guide sorts the best brandy to buy by style and budget, using real prices from our catalog, explains what the word brandy legally means, and shows how cognac, Armagnac, Spanish and South African bottles differ so you can choose with confidence.

What Counts as Brandy?

Brandy is a spirit distilled from fermented fruit, and most of it is made from grapes. In United States law, brandy is spirits distilled from the fermented juice, mash or wine of fruit, or from the residue of those, at less than 190 proof, and bottled at no less than 80 proof (40% alcohol by volume). The rule also says grape brandy aged at least two years in oak may be labelled “grape brandy” or simply “brandy”, while grape brandy aged less than two years in oak must be labelled “immature”. The text is in 27 CFR 5.145.

That definition explains why the category is so broad. Cognac, Armagnac, Spanish brandy, South African brandy and American brandy are all brandy. Calvados and apple brandy are fruit brandies made from apples. Pisco and grappa belong to the family too. What changes between them is the grape, the still, the cask and the local rules.

Some styles have stricter rules than the general definition. For cognac, the Cognac trade body (the BNIC) says the spirit must be aged at least two years in oak, and sets age grades: V.S at least 2 years, V.S.O.P at least 4 and X.O at least 10. It also says the age on the label is that of the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend. You can read the rules on the BNIC protected origin page. Our guide to cognac vs brandy covers the difference in detail.

If you want one answer, the best brandy to start with is a mid-priced bottle in a style you already enjoy. For smooth, easy sipping on a small budget, the Klipdrift Premium Brandy is a popular entry point. For an older Spanish style, the Torres 15 Year Brandy adds a clear age statement for $34.99. You can compare the whole range in our brandy collection.

Brandy From France: Cognac, Armagnac and Calvados

If your shortlist is brandy from France, there are three families to know, and each has its own character and price range.

  • Cognac. The best-known French brandy, made in the Cognac region under the BNIC rules. Our cognac range starts under $25 and reaches the thousands for ultra-aged blends.
  • Armagnac brandy. Made in south-west France and sold with its own age labels. Our Armagnac range starts at $49.99 for the Janneau V.S.O.P and reaches into the hundreds. For a bottle with a clear age statement at a moderate price, the Delord 15 Year Armagnac is $79.99. Our Armagnac guide explains the style in more detail.
  • Calvados. Apple brandy from Normandy. A V.S.O.P such as Christian Drouin Calvados V.S.O.P costs $44.99 and is a good first step into apple brandy.

Armagnac’s own trade body, the BNIA, says the spirit is made in south-west France and publishes age categories including V.S, V.S.O.P, Hors d’Âge and X.O. We do not quote minimum ages for those categories here, so check the label and our listing for the specific bottle before relying on a category name.

A quick comparison helps. Cognac is the widest and most consistent range, with a bottle at nearly every price. Armagnac can offer older bottles at lower prices than cognac, for example the 15 year Delord at $79.99 against $89.99 for the 12 year Courvoisier in our range. Calvados is the choice if you prefer an apple style over a grape one.

Good Brandy for Less: Value Picks

You do not need to spend much to find good brandy. The Spanish and South African bottles in our range show how little extra an older age statement can cost. Here is the price per year of age for the aged Spanish and South African bottles we stock:

BottleOriginPricePer year of age
Torres 10 YearSpain$24.99$2.50
Torres 15 YearSpain$34.99$2.33
Torres 20 YearSpain$44.99$2.25
KWV 10 YearSouth Africa$34.99$3.50
KWV 15 YearSouth Africa$49.99$3.33

The Torres line is the clearest value story. Moving from the 10 year to the 20 year costs $20 more, so each extra year of age costs about $2. That is far cheaper per year than almost any whisky, which makes aged brandy one of the best-value ways to buy an old spirit. Note that the Torres 10 Year is 38% ABV against 40% for the 15 and 20, which is worth knowing if you compare strength.

If you want a good brandy under $30, the South African Klipdrift Premium Brandy at $24.99 and the Torres 10 Year at $24.99 are the standouts. Under $20, the California bottles from Christian Brothers and E&J cost $14.99 to $19.99 and are used widely in cocktails.

What Each Budget Buys: Top Brandy Brands by Price

Our brandy range has 64 bottles, so it helps to know what to expect at each price. Here is how they break down, using our current list prices:

  • Up to $25 (10 bottles). American brandy, South African brandy such as Klipdrift and Oude Meester, Spanish and Italian brandy, an apple brandy and a pisco. These are the everyday and cocktail bottles.
  • $25 to $50 (16 bottles). The widest choice: aged Spanish brandy, South African ten and fifteen year olds, two Calvados, apple brandy, grappa, pisco and an entry Armagnac. This is where most buyers find a good brandy for sipping.
  • $50 to $100 (11 bottles). Armagnac, Calvados, grappa, grape brandy and a Brandy de Jerez. The step up in age and care shows here.
  • $100 to $200 (13 bottles). Mostly Armagnac, including several from Bas-Armagnac, with grape brandy, Brandy de Jerez and Calvados.
  • Over $200 (14 bottles). Older Armagnac and Calvados, plus vintage rarities that run into the tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The takeaway is that the $25 to $100 range holds most of the best-value brandy. Above $100 you are mostly buying age, vintage and rarity, which is worth it only if those matter to you.

Best Brandy to Drink: Neat, Over Ice or Mixed

The best brandy to drink depends on how you plan to serve it. A practical split:

  • Neat or with a few drops of water: choose an aged bottle. A Torres 15 or 20, a V.S.O.P or X.O cognac, or an older Armagnac suits slow sipping.
  • Over ice: a V.S.O.P cognac or a South African brandy is a good fit.
  • In cocktails: use an affordable V.S or American brandy. Spending on a rare bottle for a mixed drink wastes the age.
  • After dinner: an Armagnac or a Calvados gives a different flavour profile from cognac and works well on its own.

For a short visual primer on the main families, Bartending Pro’s Cognac, Brandy and Armagnac: Alcohol 101 video runs under four minutes. It is an educator’s overview, so use it as an introduction before you read the details on each label.

How to Choose the Best Brandy for You

Work through these steps:

  1. Decide how you will drink it. Sipping calls for age. Mixing does not.
  2. Set a budget band. Under $30 gets you good everyday bottles. $30 to $80 gets you aged Spanish, entry cognac and Armagnac. Above $100 is X.O cognac and older Armagnac.
  3. Pick a style. Grape brandy such as cognac or Spanish brandy is the standard. Calvados is apple. Pisco and grappa are different again.
  4. Check the label. Look for the age statement, the strength and the origin.

If you are comparing the top brandy brands, remember that fame and quality are different things. Large houses give consistency. Smaller producers, especially in Armagnac and craft American brandy, can offer more individual bottles. Our brandy range includes both so you can taste your way across styles.

How to Buy Brandy Online Safely

Before you order:

  1. Check the exact name, age and ABV. Strength varies from 38% to 43% across our range.
  2. Check the delivery terms. Caskworth offers same-day delivery to 33 U.S. states and 7 Canadian provinces for in-stock bottles ordered by 2PM. The minimum order is $249.99, delivery fees depend on your location, and a 21+ age check applies at delivery.
  3. Read the returns policy. Returns must be sent back by mail within 7 days so authenticity can be checked.
  4. Combine bottles to reach the minimum order. A few good brandy bottles at $35 to $80 easily clear $249.99.

Common Mistakes

  • Assuming brandy means cognac. Cognac is one kind of brandy, with its own rules. Spanish, South African and American brandy are different styles with different prices.
  • Buying the oldest bottle you can afford. Age changes the style, and some drinkers prefer a younger, brighter brandy.
  • Ignoring the strength. A 38% bottle will taste lighter than a 43% one.
  • Using expensive brandy in mixed drinks. Save aged bottles for sipping.
  • Skipping the label. The age, origin and strength tell you more than the brand name.

Match the style to how you drink, the bottle to your budget, and you will land on the best brandy for you, not the one a ranking told you to buy.

Best Brandy FAQ

There is no single best brandy, because it depends on style and budget. For value, the Torres 15 Year at $34.99 or Klipdrift Premium at $24.99 are strong choices. For a classic, try a V.S.O.P cognac. For a special occasion, look at an aged Armagnac or an X.O cognac.
Brandy is made by distilling fermented fruit juice, mash or wine, and most of it is made from grapes. Under US rules it is bottled at no less than 40% ABV. Apple brandy, such as Calvados, uses apples, and grappa uses the pressed skins left after winemaking.
Cognac is a brandy made in the Cognac region of France under strict rules, including at least two years in oak. All cognac is brandy, but most brandy is not cognac. Spanish, South African, American and Armagnac brandies all follow different rules.
Good options under $30 at Caskworth include Klipdrift Premium Brandy at $24.99, Torres 10 Year at $24.99 and Oude Meester at $22.99. All are bottled between 38% and 43% ABV, and they work for sipping, over ice or in simple cocktails.
Neither is better. Cognac is usually more consistent and widely available. Armagnac can offer older bottles at lower prices, for example the Delord 15 Year at $79.99 against $89.99 for the Courvoisier 12 Year in our range. Try one of each to see which style you prefer.
